I was reading the Star newspaper and came across this green house in Tropicana, Selangor. It's built using recycled wood, uses solar panel roofs and has a storm water system. This is my dream home.

No to Teflon pots and pans

Teflon is a non-stick coating used on pots and pans. The coating is a toxic chemical that comes off when heated at high temperatures. It leaches into our food and eventually our bodies. Toxic fumes that are released from hot teflon pans cause birds to die and could result in making people fall sick.

Safest cookware alternatives are cast iron, enameled cast iron, glass and stainless steel.

My mom has been reminding me to change my cookware and it's about time I do so. And you should too.

For all mummies with diaper-wearing children,

Did you know that "disposable diapers are the third largest contributors to landfills in the world and yet only five percent of the population uses them? And that a single disposable diaper can take up to 500 years to biodegrade in the landfill?" ( gdiapers )

Go Bokashi

I have just learned an easy way to compost organic kitchen waste - using the bokashi system. Read all about Bokashi here and how you too can start recycling your organic waste the natural way.

Just in case you didn't know what can be composted, they include:

• fresh fruits and vegetables
• cooked food
• cooked or uncooked meat and fish
• cheese, eggs, bread, tea bags etc
• wilted flowers
• tissue papers ( yeah always remember this doesn't belong in the paper category! )

We Are What We Do

No matter what actions you take, be it for yourself or the community, do it on a regular basis and help change the world. Some of what I practice from the "Do Something" list are :

1. Decline plastic bags - we use Jusco's reusable shopping bag
2. Use energy-saving light bulbs
3. Plant trees
4. Read a story with a child
   
5. Learn more, do more - reading photography books and familiarising with CS3
   
6. Get fitter - my hubby and I are newbie gym members

Must:

1. Remember people's names
2. Have more meals together
3. Take the kids to the playground more frequently
   
4. Learn more, do more - need to attend photography workshops

Free Rice for Hungry People

My daughter was playing games on National Geographic Kids website when I saw the Free Rice link. Go do the word test there. You will not only improve your vocabulary but feed hungry people at the same time. Enjoy!

Please Recycle!

My daughter and I take HL fresh milk everyday. We save the barcodes (for the on-going contest!) but never recycle the cartons. FYI, the cartons are recyclable! Don't simply throw them in the trash! Rinse, dry and flatten the cartons before taking them to the collection centre.

If you are in the Bukit Rimau/ Kota Kemuning area, the closest recycling community is at MBSA multipurpose hall, Seksyen 31, opens third Sundays, 9am - 12pm. For a centre near you, click here.

OK from today onwards, there will be an additional bin next to the usual paper, plastic and glass bins in our house.
